U.S. Army Education Outreach Program Fellowships

The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases supports the advancement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and literacy by providing opportunities for students to gain valuable experience in an environment that focuses on research, information technology, engineering, and various other disciplines. Students will undergo a 10-week internship under the guidance of a mentor who specializes in these respective areas. This program sponsors apprenticeships for high school and undergraduate students, as well as fellowship opportunities for post-baccalaureate, Masterís level and Post-Doctoral students.

Depending on student interests and their educational institution's program, students may receive class credit for their research participation. The research opportunities may be a paid position or a volunteer position. Students may apply through the Army Educational Outreach Program website at www.usaeop.com External Link, opens in new window.

Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS)

GEMS is a one-week hands-on program available during the summer for rising 7th through 12th graders aimed at involving and engaging young people with STEM early in their academic careers. The program uses a multi-disciplinary educational curriculum with age-appropriate, hands-on activities in a teaching laboratory. Students may choose either a biomedical or engineering focus. The Department of Defense (DOD) Historically Black Colleges & Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions (HBCU/MI)

This Summer Research Program is supported by the Department of Defenseís Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering/Research, Technology & Laboratories (OUSD(R&E)/RT&L) and is administered by the Department of the Army, on behalf of the Under Secretary of Defense. The program provides a bridge between the classroom and real-world experiences and aims to increase the number of minority scientists and engineers throughout the DOD. Students conduct research relevant to the defense mission under the supervision of DOD scientists and engineers. Motivated students, both undergraduate and graduate, are placed for a 10-week research experience at DOD facilities across the nation. Oak Ridge Institute of Science Education (ORISE) Fellowships

ORISE fellowships at USAMRIID are opportunities for members of the STEM academic community (undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, postdocs, and university faculty members) to work alongside and be mentored by Army scientists. With flexible, renewable appointments, ORISE provides recent graduates with research opportunities to help prepare motivated students for a career in STEM while providing them with laboratory knowledge to use in pursuit of an advanced degree.
